Four hours, forty-eight rounds, once every twelve months. Miss it and Florida suspends your license automatically — which means you stop being able to work an armed post. We run these year-round in Miami, and we tell you before your date arrives.
To keep a Florida Class “G” statewide firearm license active, you must complete four hours of requalification training and pass a 48-round cycle of fire during each 12-month period of your two-year license term.
If you do not complete the training during the first year of that two-year term, Florida law provides for automatic suspension of the license. You cannot legally work an armed post while it is suspended.
What the annual requalification actually is
It is not a new licence and it is not a full course. It is a four-hour block that reviews the same curriculum topics covered in your original 28-hour Class G training — safety, mechanical operation, legal use of force — including any changes in the law since you last sat down. Then you go to the range and shoot a qualification.
The range portion is a 48-round cycle of fire. You have to pass it. This is not a participation requirement; officers do fail it, and when they do we work the problem rather than sending them home with a shrug.
The deadline that catches people out
A Class G license is issued for a two-year term, and this is where the confusion starts. Officers see two years on the card and assume they have two years before they need to do anything. They do not.
The requirement runs on a 12-month cycle inside that two-year term. You requalify in year one, and again in year two. Skipping the year-one requalification is what triggers the automatic suspension — and the card in your pocket will still show a date that has not passed yet, which is exactly why people get caught.
The licence expiring and the qualification expiring are two different dates. Agencies check the second one.
If you changed firearms, read this
Your qualification is tied to the type and calibre of the firearm you qualified with. If your job requires you to carry a firearm of a different type or calibre — or an additional one — Florida requires a separate four-hour training class specific to that firearm.
In practice this comes up when an officer switches employers and the new post issues a different duty weapon. Bring the gun you actually carry. If that changed, tell us when you book so we can schedule the time correctly.
What the day looks like
Every Alpha One course moves through the same three environments, and requalification is no different — it is just compressed.
- Classroom. Curriculum review, legal update, and anything that has changed in Florida law since your last requalification. Documented, and yours to keep.
- Simulator. Laser dry-fire work to clean up mechanics before you put live rounds downrange. Mistakes here cost nothing but a reset.
- Live range. The 48-round qualification course of fire, scored, with an instructor standing next to you rather than behind a counter.
What to bring
- Government-issued photo identification
- Your current Class G license
- The duty handgun you actually carry, in good working order
- A quality duty or strong-side holster
- Minimum three magazines and a magazine carrier
- Eye and hearing protection
- Ammunition — bring more than 48 rounds; you will want to warm up
- Closed-toe shoes, a baseball cap, and water

We track your expiration date
Officers rarely miss a requalification on purpose. They miss it because nobody told them the date was coming, and by the time they notice, the next available class is three weeks out and their post needs covering now.

How many hours is Florida Class G requalification?

How often do I have to requalify?

What happens if I miss my Class G requalification?
If the required annual training is not completed during the first year of the two-year license term, Florida law provides for automatic suspension of the license. While suspended you cannot lawfully work an armed post. Contact us as soon as you realise the date has passed — the sooner you requalify, the simpler the fix.
How many rounds is the Class G qualification?
The annual requalification cycle of fire is 48 rounds. Bring more than that — most officers want a warm-up before the scored course of fire.
Do I need to requalify if I changed my duty weapon?
Yes. A Class G licensee whose duties require carrying a firearm of a type and calibre different from — or in addition to — the one they qualified on must complete a four-hour training class specific to that firearm type and calibre. Tell us when you book so we schedule the time correctly.
Is my Class D license enough to work armed?
No. The Class D is the unarmed security officer licence. To work an armed post in Florida you need the Class G statewide firearm licence in addition to it, and you must keep the Class G qualification current. Alpha One does not teach the Class D — a separately licensed partner company handles that, and we will point you to them.

Who issues the licence?
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), Division of Licensing. Alpha One provides the training and the documentation required for licensure; the application itself goes to the state. We walk you through it.
