If your requalification date has passed, you are probably reading this because a supervisor asked for proof and you did not have it. Here is exactly what Florida requires and how quickly we can get you back on the line.
Florida requires four hours of requalification training and a 48-round qualification every 12 months. If the required annual training is not completed during the first year of your two-year license term, Florida law provides for automatic suspension.

Why this happens to good officers
Almost nobody misses a requalification on purpose. They miss it because of one specific piece of confusion, and it catches experienced people just as often as new ones.
A Class G license is issued for two years. The card in your pocket shows an expiration date two years out. But the requalification requirement runs every 12 months inside that term. So an officer looks at a card that has not expired, concludes everything is fine, and is unknowingly out of compliance for months.
The date on your card and the date your qualification lapses are two different dates. Employers check the second one.
What to do right now
- Find your last qualification date. Not the license issue date — the date you last shot a requalification. If you trained with us, it is in your student file and we can look it up for you.
- Stop working armed posts until it is resolved. This is the part people want to negotiate. Don't. Working an armed assignment without a current qualification puts you, and your employer's licence, in a position neither of you wants to defend.
- Call us and book the next available requalification. We run these year-round, not on a monthly cohort schedule, which usually means days rather than weeks.
- Confirm your status with FDACS. The Division of Licensing is the authority on your actual license standing, and there is a public licensee search.
What to expect when you come in
The requalification itself is the standard four-hour block — curriculum review, legal update, and the 48-round qualification course of fire. It is the same class whether you are three days late or several months late.
What changes is the paperwork around it. If your license has been suspended rather than simply lapsed, there may be additional steps with FDACS, and we will tell you plainly what we can and cannot handle on your behalf. What we can always do is document the training properly so that whatever the state asks for, you have it.
Bring the handgun you actually carry. If your duty weapon changed type or calibre since your last qualification, say so when you book — Florida treats that as a separate four-hour requirement.

This is the part that actually matters. Requalifying once solves today; the same gap reopens in twelve months.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still work while my Class G is suspended?
Not on an armed post. A Class G authorises you to carry a firearm on duty; while it is suspended, that authority is not in effect. Whether you can work an unarmed assignment depends on your Class D status and your employer.

Do I have to retake the full 28-hour Class G course?
The annual requirement is the four-hour requalification, not the initial 28-hour course. Whether anything further is required in your specific situation depends on your license status with FDACS — call us with your details and we will tell you what we see.
My card has not expired. Am I still fine?
Not necessarily. The licence term is two years, but the requalification requirement runs every 12 months within that term. An unexpired card does not mean a current qualification — this is the single most common reason officers are caught out.
