five levels deep
Owning a gun is not a skill. This is the ladder that turns it into one — from a clean draw stroke to making the right decision, on the clock, with a shot timer running and someone watching.
Alpha One runs a five-level defensive pistol program. Each level is a one-day course split across classroom, simulator, and live fire, and each has a pass standard you have to meet before moving up.
Level 5 completion awards the Alpha One Certificate of Defensive Pistol Competency — a documented record that you were tested, not just present.
The ladder
Level 2 — Draw & Foundational Tune-Up
For shooters who know the basics and are ready to be efficient. Holster safety, an efficient draw stroke, presentation, safe re-holstering, emergency and tactical reloads, tap-rack immediate action, and an introduction to the shot timer. Accuracy work at 7–10 yards, dominant-hand-only, and an introduction to non-dominant hand. 250 rounds.
Level 3 — Defensive Application
Where it starts to look like a real problem. Drawing from concealment, garment clearing, shooting while moving forward and laterally, reloading during movement, use of cover versus concealment, barricade work, and positional shooting — kneeling, squatting, supine, urban prone. Failure drills, target discrimination, multiple target transitions, verbal commands. 300 rounds.
Level 4 — Performance Under Stress
Measurable standards under time pressure and cognitive load. Timed draw standards, performance benchmarking, multiple threat engagement and prioritisation, movement in all directions, shooting from compromised positions, and reduced-light work with a handheld flashlight. 350 rounds. Bring a light.
Level 5 — Scenario-Based Certification
The final evaluation. A full qualification course of fire, shoot / no-shoot drills, scenario-based engagements, one-hand malfunction clearance, low-light qualification, and stress inoculation. It closes with a defensive articulation exercise — explaining, out loud, why you did what you did. 400 rounds.
Why it is built as a ladder
Because skipping steps produces confident people who are dangerous. Each level has a prerequisite and a pass standard, and the standards are not decorative — students do get held back, and being held back is cheaper than the alternative.
Class size is capped at ten students per instructor. You get corrected while you are making the mistake, not in a debrief three drills later.
Three environments, every level
- Classroom — the legal reasoning attached to every technique. If you ever have to explain your actions, you should be able to articulate why.
- Simulator lab — laser dry-fire. Real mechanics, real repetitions, zero live ammunition while the habits are still forming.
- Live range — indoor and outdoor ranges across South Florida, plus a private range in Okeechobee for scenario work that an indoor bay cannot accommodate.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a concealed carry licence to attend?
No. These are civilian training courses and no licence is required to attend. What each level requires is completion of the level before it, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
How much ammunition do I need?
Level 2 is 250 rounds, Level 3 is 300, Level 4 is 350, and Level 5 is 400. Bring a little more than the minimum — running short mid-course means sitting out drills you paid for.
What equipment do I need?
A quality handgun in good working order, a strong-side or concealment holster, minimum three magazines and a carrier, eye and hearing protection, a concealment garment from Level 3 onward, and a handheld flashlight from Level 4. Knee pads are recommended for Levels 3 to 5. Closed-toe shoes.
Can I skip to Level 3 or 4?
Only with equivalent experience, and we will want to see it rather than take your word for it. The levels build on each other deliberately — a student placed too high spends the day behind instead of learning.
